Getting to Buyukkonuk
Buyukkonuk (Komi Kebir) is situated at the start of the Karpaz Peninsula in the east part of Cyprus, about midpoint between the north and south coasts. By car it is 45 minutes from Famagusta, 75 minutes from Ercan Airport or Nicosia and 1 ½ to two hours from Kyrenia. Buyukkonuk is accessible from Kyrenia using the north coast road (which is currently being upgraded) or the Salamis (Famagusta-Dipkarpaz) road from Famagusta. With the opening of the borders between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities, it is possible to travel to Larnaca or Paphos airports and travel to the north.
From Ercan Airport
Heading north out of Ercan Airport, continue across the overpass and follow the Iskele road to the east until it joins the main Salamis (Famagusta-Dipkarpaz) road, where you turn left. Drive through the fishing port of Bogaz, and after a kilometer you will see petrol refinery spheres on the coast as the road turns inland. At the next intersection, turn left to go through Tuzluca and then another 5km on to Buyukkonuk.
Location
Büyükkonuk, located at the base of the “The Panhandle” – the long, narrow stretch of Cyprus pointing eastward into the Mediterranean Sea, could be called the gateway to the Karpaz Peninsula. The village’s geographic location is one of its greatest strengths, as it is situated minutes from the blue waters on the northern and southern coasts as well as rugged mountainous terrain. As you climb across the exposed rock spine of the mountains, standing on the Byzantine-era Kantara Castle walls, your journey is rewarded with a breathtaking landscape that includes open fields, farms and villages. In winter and spring, Büyükkonuk is surrounded by lush greenery of carob and olive groves, farm pastures and forests. The 360 degree panorama provides the sensation that you are at the top of the world.
The village of Büyükkonuk is a logical base for Karpaz visitors, as it has around 80 bed capacity in 7 different guesthouses, bungalows and B&Bs. This historic village also features a renovated olive mill, which provides visitors with a close-up view of the region’s history. Büyükkonuk is the starting point for a nature trail network that has more than 25 kilometers of trails for all ages with hiking, biking, and donkey riding trails through beautiful and rustic topography that stretches from farmers’ fields to mountain vistas overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Büyükkonuk is a great place to drop out of the hustle and bustle of traditional tourist destinations, while at the same time dropping in to a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can be customized to fit the needs of individual travelers. The Karpaz is waiting for you and Büyükkonuk is a great place to start. Contact us today for more information!
